HOW WE'VE EVOLVED

Our History

1977
In 1977, David Hitchcock ventured to the Sierra Nevada Foothills from the Bay Area and opened up an architectural practice serving the Bear Valley and Arnold areas, thus establishing Aspen Street Architects, Inc. Aspen Street Architects was the first and only practice, for multiple years, in Calaveras County.
1977
1983
In 1983, Aspen Street Architects moved down the hill to the historic gold mining town of Angels Camp, California.
1983
1983 thru 2000
In the following years, between 1983 and 2000, we worked with over 30 acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and clinics, as well as over 20 school districts. During this time, we at Aspen Street honed our specialty in assisting rural healthcare facilities and school districts with funding assistance, master planning, design and successfully navigating the regulatory maze of jurisdictional agencies. Our footprint expanded beyond Calaveras County and the surrounding Sierra Foothills, through across the Central Valley, the Northern California Trinity Mountains, and their adjacent coastal towns.

Early 2000's
In the early 2000’s, Aspen Street Architects relocated to our current office outside of downtown Angels Camp but still within Calaveras County. A highlight of these years included our involvement as the architect for the Rural Health Design Consortium, an organization of 13 critical access hospitals across California who were interested in finding ways to improve healthcare delivery at reasonable costs in an era when healthcare construction was skyrocketing. This involvement culminated with the design of a modular acute care template hospital that was accepted by the US Department of Health and Human Services as a prototype for a critical access hospital plan.

2010
As the 2010’s advanced, Aspen Street’s focus grew from the rural backbone we established, to clients across the Sacramento Valley and west coast. We are now a preferred vendor for multiple healthcare organizations within the Central Valley. We have completed projects for various branches of the federal government, supported numerous civic agencies in planning and studies of public places, and have partnered with many general contractors assisting with design-build endeavors.

2012
After an EF5 rated tornado destroyed the existing facility of Mercy St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, Aspen Street had the privilege to lead a team that completed a 150,000+ square foot modular acute care replacement hospital. Due to the advancements in modular construction, we were able to execute this critical access plan efficiently within 8 1/2 months.

The Future

Aspen Street Architect’s mission has led us to where we are today. We have maintained our roots and established lasting relationships. We have grown in specialty and knowledge, but our core strength remains where it was in the beginning. We strive for sustainable design solutions that are practical and cost effective for projects ranging from commercial and institutional endeavors to technical healthcare and educational environments.

Every employee at Aspen Street Architects Inc. has a significant role in our success. Under David Hitchcock’s guidance, Aspen Street early on became and is still, an employee-owned corporation. We are invested in the development and growth of each employee to the betterment of the firm and the services we offer to our clients. Although small in number, we are proud to have maintained a successful firm for over 40 years.
